Doubles League

league fwcc doubles mainDoubles is back for the 2024/2025 season at Fort William Curling Club! This 16-team open format league welcomes curlers of all skill levels to enjoy this fast-paced version of curling with a lot of rocks in play. The league will follow the Canada Curling Mixed Doubles rules.

Doubles consists of two-player teams, which can be any combination of male and female players. With only 2 players on a team, each player either needs to call their own line or opt to sweep their own rock. Essentially, both players share the duty of skipping the team. There is a strong focus on draw weight and rock positioning as well as communication with your partner. Doubles allows you to really hone in on your draw weight and improve your curling skills. This is a great game to challenge the seasoned curling pro while also helping newer curlers develop their skills. This league allows 2-person team entry or individuals may sign up and be paired with another player based on availability.

Rules of Play

  1. The teams shall toss a coin to determine which team delivers the first stone in the first end. The winner of the toss has the choice between playing the first or second stone of the end. The team that plays the first stone of the end has choice of handle colour.
  2. A team must be comprised of two players, with any combination of male and female players.
  3. The scoring shall be the same as in a regular game of curling.
  4. power play1One stone from each team must be prepositioned at the start of each end. The team delivering the first stone of an end, will place their stone in the centre guard position, bisecting the centre line, midway between the hog line and the front of the house. The team with hammer will place their stone in the back of the 4 foot, so it bisects the centre line and the back edge of the stone is in alignment with the back edge of the four foot. If they choose to place their stone 'out front', they shall deliver first stones in the end. Therefore, should they choose to be behind the button, they shall have last stone in the end. The team not scoring in the previous end, shall have the 'choice' in the next end. If the end is blanked, the choice shall change to the team that delivered first in the blanked end. The prepositioned stones are eligible to be counted in the scoring.
  5. Each team shall deliver 5 stones per end. The player from each team delivering the team's first stone of the end must also deliver the team's last stone of the end. The other team member shall delivery the team's second, third and fourth stones for that end.
  6. The player delivering the first stone may change from end to end.
  7. No stone in play, including the prepositioned stones and those in the house can be moved to an out-of-play position prior to the delivery of the fourth stone of an end (the fourth delivered stone is the first stone that can remove any stone from play). If there is a violation, the delivered stone shall be removed from play, and any displaced stone(s) shall be replaced to their original position by the non-offending team.
  8. While the team is in the process of delivery, the non-delivering player must be positioned inside the hogline, with at least one foot on the ice surface at the playing end of the team’s sheet, OR, in a position on the team’s sheet to sweep the delivered stone. After delivery, either or both players may sweep their delivered stone and any stones set in motion that belong to their team anywhere in front of the teeline at the playing end. This applies during all of the team’s delivered stones, including the Last Stone Draws.
  9. If a player delivers a stone out of proper rotation, that stone is returned to the hack to be delivered by the correct player, after any displaced stones have been replaced to their original positions by the non-offending team. Should the infraction not be discovered until after the delivery of a subsequent stone, play continues as if the infraction had not occurred.
  10. power play2Power Play: Once per game, each team with last stone, has the option to place the stones in a "power play" position. The in-house stone of the team with last stone in that end is placed with the back edge of the stone on the teeline, splitting the 8 foot and the 12 foot rings. The guard is repositioned from the centre-line to a direct line between the middle of the in-house stone and the middle of the hack. The in-house stone will be directly behind the guard. The guard position will be at the same distance from the rings a the normal position of the centre guard for that game. The team calling the power play can decide which side of the house they would like the stone to be placed. A power play cannot be called in extra ends.
  11. All games are 6 ends (or buzzer) whichever comes first. If the two teams agree prior to the game to play less than 6, the buzzer rule must still be followed if time becomes an issue. The buzzer indicates you complete the end you're in and play 1 more.
  12. An end is considered complete once the final stone thrown in an end comes to rest.
  13. Please remember to keep up the pace of play. The buzzer gives you 20 minutes before the next draw. You should be able to complete your game in that time frame.
  14. The Modified Free Guard Zone Rule applies. This means that no stone in play, including the "positioned" stones and those in the house can be moved to an out-of-play position prior to the delivery of the fourth stone of an end (the fourth delivered stone is the first stone that can remove any stone from play). If there is a violation, the delivered stone shall be removed from play, and any displaced stone(s) shall be replaced to their original position by the non-offending team.
  15. The “No-tick” Rule is not in effect.
  16. Ties are allowed in round robin play.

Playoff Rules

The above Rules of Play apply with the following additions/modifications:

  1. For the Finals, the hammer will go to the team with the higher seed in the Final Standings. It will be noted on the draw board.
  2. Tie Breaker Rules: If a game is tied after the last end, a draw to the button will determine the winner.
    • Each team will choose one person to throw the rock.
    • The team that scored in the final end throws first.
    • FULL SWEEPING is allowed.
    • The skip OR designated broom holder of the non-shooting team is allowed to sweep the opponent’s rock behind the tee line just like a normal shot in game play.
    • If no rocks land in the house, each team will throw again until a winner is determined.
